Robertine Hughes Jordan

Robertine Hughes Jordan, 88, of Christiansburg, passed away on October 31, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Waldeck Jordan; and her parents, Archie and Hazel Payne Hughes.

She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie J. Gutshall and husband Larry; grandchildren, Eric S. Gutshall and wife Tonya, Justin S. Gutshall and wife Jill, Evan S. Gutshall and wife Caroline, and Jordan S. Gutshall; great-grandchildren, Katie Gutshall, Jacob Gutshall, Caleb Gutshall, and Ava Gutshall; brother, Billy Hughes; as well as special friend and caregiver, Virginia Giles.

Robertine was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, and a member of the McDaniel Chapter No. 47 O.E.S. She was one of the longest serving Commissioners of Revenue in the state’s history, and served the people of Montgomery County for 46 years. She was also active in the local and state Democratic party. She loved spending time with friends, especially with her card groups. She was known for hosting many parties for these friends. She was extremely close to her three grandsons and she spoke of them so often that people assumed they were her sons.

Robertine was not only the matriarch of her family, a career woman, and devoted to her church, but she was also involved in the day to day operations of her farm and home place. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, especially after her retirement in 1995. However, her greatest accomplishment was her family that she led with great honor and dignity. Her legacy will live on through her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that she loved so dearly.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 1, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Copeland officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
