Rodney Preston Kinder, age 87 of Christianburg, died Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, VA.
Rodney was born to the late Guy Thomas Kinder and Louella Nye Kinder in Radford, VA, on April 24, 1925. He attended school in Radford. Upon graduation from Radford High School in 1942, he entered the Coast Guard. He served on the USS Vance DE387 during World War II, making more than 30 round trips from the United States to Europe. After the war, he worked for the N & W Railway and retired after 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Juanita Altizer Kinder; sons, Bill N. Kinder & wife Carole of Tampa, FL, Tim Kinder & wife Lynn of Newton, NC; grandson, Christopher Kinder & wife Colleen of Tampa, FL; granddaughters, Laura Nye Kinder of Orlando, FL and Adrienne Kinder of Raleigh, NC; great-granddaughter, Emma Kinder of Tampa, FL; and a special niece, Mary Margaret Smith of Richmond, VA.
Rodney was a member of the Christiansburg Church of Christ.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Payne and special physical therapists, Catie and Kimberly for all of their love and care.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 9, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 10th at 1:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Church of Christ, with Mr. Dennis Curd and Clarence Lavender officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
