Roger Lee Ratcliffe

Roger Lee Ratcliffe, 75, of Pilot VA, passed away on December 10, 2024. 

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy Ratcliffe and Sallie Mae Spencer Ratcliffe; and brother, James"(Dubby") Ratcliffe. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Nuckols Ratcliffe; nephew, Cory James Ratcliffe; aunts, Sue (George) Kouzoures and Summie Spencer; and many special and loving cousins and friends.

Roger was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a Military Policeman at Fort Dix, New Jersey. After leaving ther military, he worked for a time with his father as a general tradesman doing carpentry, electrical and other construction projects. He also worked in retail at Vance Hardeware. It was his time in the military as an MP that fostered his love for police work. In 1977, he began work as a police dispatcher at Virginia Tech and soon moved into a position as campus police officer; a job he held for twenty-five years before retiring in 2002. 

Roger loved the outdoors and was an avid deer hunter. Even though in recent years his health prevented him from doing what he loved, he never stopped making plans for his next hunt. 

Heartfelt thanks go out to the caring and compassionate nurses and doctors at Carilion NRVMC, who took such wonderful care of Roger during his journey and who became like family to us.

A public visitation will be held on Friday December 13, 2024, at Horne Funeral Home from noon to 2 p.m.  Funeral Service will begin at 2 p.m. in the Chapel, with Pastor Rodney Collins officiating. Interment after the Service will be in Sunset Cemetery.
