Our precious mother, Sylvia Delores Rucker passed away at the age of 71 on September 13, 2022. She fought her hardest to stay, but her body had given its all to her debilitating illness.
Sylvia was born on September 28, 1950 to the late Louie C. and Delphia V. (Harrison) Lawson in Richlands, VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Phyllis A. Jeter, Pat Waldon, Nancy Rosier, Mattie Bolyard; brothers, Timothy W. Lawson and Nelson T. Lawson.
Sylvia was the devoted wife of 32 years to John Otis Rucker and loving mother to her children, Lylah (Dan) Whitaker, Julie (Sam) Fleet, Robert Sartin, Melissa (Mike) Woolwine from her previous husband Leroy Sartin; and step-daughters, Tammy (Susan) Rucker and Lisa (Chuck) Tulevech. She is also survived by her sisters, Linda Detamore, Joyce (Wayne) Honaker, Lisa Faye Lawson, Rhonda Iverson; brothers, James (Betty) Lawson, David (Rhonda) Lawson.
Sylvia was a loving and caring mother who supported all her children unconditionally. She loved sharing her joy of making quilts and baking with her daughters. Her grandchildren, Robert, Leslie, Chris, Stephanie, Samantha, Joseph, Ashley, Kevin, Marisa, Megan, Michael, Kimberly, and Cody were the light of her life and brought her so much joy. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren.
It would be wrong to say she lost her battle with her numerous illnesses because she never stopped fighting over the years, no matter how sick she was. She was determined to get better and stronger, there was no quit in her. Just because she is no longer with us, doesn’t mean she lost her fight.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 18, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Judes Children’s Hospital.
