Theda Compton Webster of Christiansburg passed away peacefully on January 30, 2017. She was 81 years old. Born in Dickenson County to the late Rufus and Ruby Compton, Theda was a staunch defender of her four younger siblings. She met her future husband, Herby Webster, when he followed her school bus home. They were married April 26, 1952.
Theda worked at Blue Ridge Manufacturing (the Overall Factory) for 25 years, then at Montgomery County Social Services for 35 years, where she did a little bit of everything. A co-worker described her as one who would do whatever she could to help anyone.
Theda was intelligent, perceptive, and forward thinking. She was a gifted seamstress and quilter
who willingly shared her skills with others. She was a strong believer in volunteer work and charity, a trait she sought to instill in her son, Jim. She was a founding member of the Meadowbrook Quilters and a longtime member of RSVP, where she was part of a group that made quilts for raffles to support RSVP scholarships. She did much behind-the-scenes work in support of the McConnell Library and SELU programs at Radford University. In later years, she added volunteering at the MCEAP Thrift Shop evaluating and organizing donations.
Theda was preceded in death by her husband, Herby Webster; and brothers, Jeff and Wayne Compton. She is survived by her faithful son, Jim Webster; brother, K.G. Compton, both of Christiansburg; sister, Dorothy Willis of Clover, SC; and various nieces and nephews. Special friends include many from her work and her charitable activities, especially quilting buddies, Donna Conner, Terry Borgir, and Anna Dalton. Special thanks to Connie Compton for helping care for Theda during her last days.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017, at 2 p.m. at North Fork Baptist Church, 905 Lusters Gate Road, Blacksburg, with Rev. R. Paul Henrickson officiating. Interment will follow in North Fork Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, 6620 Roanoke Road, Shawsville, VA 24162, or to RSVP, 210 Pepper Street, Suite D, Christiansburg, VA 24073.
