Timothy Haynes Johnson, 61, of Blacksburg, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones (and blissfully unaware that his Washington Redskins had lost their season opener).
Tim was born on July 25, 1956, in Christiansburg, VA, to the late Thomas and Kathryn Johnson. After graduating from Christiansburg High School and earning a nursing degree at Radford University, he embarked on a career and life dedicated to caring for others. He worked at LifeNet Health and the Carilion Health Systems, volunteered with the Christiansburg Rescue Squad for many years, and recently became a member of Kiwanis International, just like his dad.
Tim is survived by his children, Matthew Johnson (Lauren), Kristen Johnson (Lee), Preston Johnson, and Josephine Johnson; grandsons, Elias and Jonah Zimmerman, who knew him as their beloved “Pop-Pop”; devoted companion, Patricia Prince; brothers, Thomas “Jay” Johnson (Amy), and David Johnson (Alison); nieces, Erin Johnson (John) and Laura Cobbs (Frank); nephews, Tommy and Sammy Johnson; great-niece, Aria Cobbs; and his poodle, Jethro, who rarely left his side during his final days.
Tim was kind, spirited, silly, and always quick with a practical joke or supportive fist bump. He most loved spending time with his family, from wild backyard football games and wrestling matches to serious conversations about life, parenting and politics. He also was a fan of Redskins and Hokies football, Beatles music, the Andy Griffith Show, voting Republican, and hogging the homemade sour cream pound cake at Thanksgiving.
A Celebration of Tim’s life will be held at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 7, 2017. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., and the Service will begin at 2 p.m.
The family wishes to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for its compassionate care during Tim’s final illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to LifeNet Health (lifenethealth.org) to honor Tim’s commitment to the gift of organ donation, or to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad (christiansburgrs.org).
