Vance (V.C.) Martin, 85, of Christiansburg passed away peacefully Sunday April 4, 2010 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
He was a retired employee of Radford Army Ammunition Plant with over 36 years service. V.C. was born March 19, 1925 in Montgomery County. He was predeceased by his son Ricky Martin and parents Ruth B. and Charlie Martin and his step-father Wilford P. Hornbarger, a brother, Edward Martin. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Allie Yates Martin; daughters and sons in law Sandra and Vernon Martin, Judy and Charles Long. Daughter in law; Jenny B. Martin. Grandchildren; Stacey (Michael) Vaughan, Jeremy Long, Kerri (Alex) Martin. Great Granddaughter; Katie Messer. Brothers and sisters in law; Bobby and Claremont Yates and Gene and Evelyn Yates. Many special nieces and nephews , cousins and friends.
V. C. was a Navy veteran , Coxswain V6 USNR SV, of World II and a survivor of Exercise Tiger. V. C. was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5311 in Christiansburg. V. C. was a faithful and enthusiastic NASCAR fan and drove a racecar in his younger years at many area tracks. He had many friends and never met a stranger.
Visitation will be Tuesday April 6, 2010 at Horne Funeral Home from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. Funeral service will be 2 Wednesday April 7, 2010 at Sowder's Chapel, Shawsville, Va. with burial in Piedmont Cemetery. Reverend Everette Shepherd, Rev. John Tibbs, Rev. Virgil McHone will officiate. Flowers will be appreciated or a donation to Christiansburg Rescue or Fire Dept. or a charity of your choice.
