Vernon Elkins

October 24, 1932 — August 20, 2011

ELKINS, VERNON D., age 78 of Christiansburg, passed away Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 24, 1932 in Montgomery County, VA the son of the late Marvin E. and Orpha Altizer Elkins. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force with four years service he was a longtime member of the Radford Church of Christ, and was retired from Radford University. A well known mandolin player of Blue Grass Music he had played with many bands in the area and on Friday nights at The Floyd Country Store.

He is survived by one sister, Helen Elkins Lovern, Denver, CO; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Lynwood Elkins and wife, Sue, Christiansburg, Douglas Dale Elkins and wife, Barbara, Radford; aunts, Faye Altizer, Christiansburg, Mary Elkins Bishop, Hiwassee; nephews, Gary Lovern, Denny Lovern and Jeff Lovern all of Denver, CO, Rick Elkins, Riner and Doug Elkins, Radford. The family will receive friends Monday evening, Aug. 22, from 6 until 8 pm at the Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, in the Horne Funeral Chapel conducted by Mr. John Croft and Mr. Rudolph Shelburne with interment to follow in Sunset Cemetery.
