Viola Agnes Tenney Payne, 85, of Blacksburg, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 6, 2013.
Agnes was born on February 23, 1928, in Troy, WV, to the late Rev. Albert and Viola Tenney. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Alma Cox, Ina Hersman, and Lena Cousins.
Agnes is survived by William H. Payne, Jr., her beloved husband of 65 years; sons, William H. Payne, III (Martha) of Richmond, Dr. Albert L. Payne (Sandra) of Danville; daughter, Patricia Payne Lightner (Bruce) of Roanoke; grandchildren, William H. Payne, IV (Jen), Dr. Christopher A. Payne (Han), April Payne Akins (A.J.), Jason A. Rotz, Stephanie Payne McGuffin, Dr. Angela Payne Wetzel (Andy), Dr. Cory Rotz Hedrick (Curtis), Timothy Wayne Lightner, and Brian Scott Lightner; and 11 great-grandchildren, Maddie, Joshua, Zachary, Abbie, Cate, Sam, Cade, Caroline, Ben, Olivia, and William. Also surviving are sisters, Wilda Chenoweth, Meta Harrison, Jean Warner, Bettie Garvey; brothers, Albert L. Tenney, Jr., Paul Tenney, and Rev. Thomas Tenney; and many nieces and nephews.
Agnes was a graduate of WV Wesleyan College and Virginia Tech. She was an elementary school teacher for 30 years in Danville and Christiansburg. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the UMW. She was also a member of the Hokie Club and loved attending Virginia Tech football games. She and Bill traveled to many away games and bowl games. After retiring, they traveled to all 50 states and abroad.
The family extends thanks to Edith Shepherd for her companionship and loving care. They also thank Dr. Michael Payne and his staff.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 8, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 9th at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Copeland and Rev. Doug Kanney officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
