Wilbur A. ‘Chick’ Thomasson, 98, of Christiansburg, formerly of Charlottesville, went Home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, December 28, 2016.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Beatrice Thomasson; son, Stephen Thomasson; wife, Stella Critzer Thomasson; second wife, Mary Bolt Thomasson; and grandson, Christopher Read Gilley. Chick is survived by his children, Richard Overton Thomasson (Linda Birckhead Thomasson), Christina Thomasson Gilley (Samuel Read Gilley); grandchildren, Richard Patrick Thomasson (Kate Kelly Thomasson), Matthew Addison Gilley (Sonja Peters), Heather Lynne Layfield (Glen Layfield), Annalynn Hardin Gilley (Josh Knott), Jacob Read Gilley (Camria Oakes Gilley); great-grandchildren, Stella Layfield, Sadie Layfield, Selah Layfield, Willa Thomasson, Fawnie Thomasson, Aubri Holland, Kenzie Gilley, Dylan Gilley, Ethan Gilley, Joshua Knott II; sister, Lilly Love Norvelle; sister-in-law, Shirley Powell; as well as other extended family and friends.
Chick attended Miller School from age 10 until age 17. He had 21 years in the Navy and was a Chief Warrant Officer – 4. He served in both Theaters in World War II on various ships and received the following medals/ribbons: Good Conduct with 1 star, European Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with 1 star, American Defense Medal with 1 star, and Commendation Ribbon. He served his Lord as an Elder and Sunday School teacher at First Christian Church, Cherry Avenue Christian Church (Charlottesville), and was a member at Belmont Christian Church (Christiansburg). He retired from Sears-Roebuck in Charlottesville, VA, as Department Manager. His focus in life was his family and providing direction, support, and love in any way possible. His guiding star and main focus on this earth was his wife of 60 years, Stella.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 2, 2017, from 5-7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at Belmont Christian Church, with Pastor Jim Bayne officiating. A Graveside Service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery, 1701 Chesapeake St, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
