William Versal Austin

February 18, 1923 — January 23, 2018

William Versal Austin, 94, of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord on January 23, 2018. He was born on February 18, 1923, in Floyd, Virginia, to the late George and Margie Austin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years and the love of his life, Glenna Vest Austin; his precious grandson, William ‘Alex’ Altizer; his sister, Beulah Whitlock Vest; and brothers, Hanfred Austin and Arnold (Madie) Austin.

Versal is survived by and will be greatly missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Deneise and Richard Altizer; brother, Dr. Fred (Vivian) Austin; brothers-in-law, Shelven ‘Sonny’ Vest and Hubert Harman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a wonderful son, husband, daddy, grandpa, brother, and uncle. He was a faithful and active member of Huffville Methodist/Brethren Church as long as his health permitted. He loved his farm and especially enjoyed raising beef cattle. He also loved to garden and share his produce with his neighbors. He was a kind and generous individual who was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Versal proudly served his country in WWII as part of the US Navy.
After returning from service, he attended school to become a professional meat cutter which he was for more than 60 years. He retired from Armour and Co. after 25 years. He also worked through the years before and after his retirement at Angle’s, Wade’s and Food Lion.

We would like to thank our family and many friends for their continuing love and support. A special thank you goes to the many angels at Radford Health and Rehab for their tender loving care of Dad and our family. Thank you also to Good Samaritan Hospice who has been so caring and helpful.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 26, 2018, from 5-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Dan Whitlock, Dr. Fred Austin, and Pastor Darren Landon officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
