William Stephen Howard (Steve), 70 of Christiansburg, VA passed away quietly in the company of family on Thursday, August 3, 2017.
Steve was born in Riner, VA in 1947 and was a graduate of Auburn High School and later from New River Community College. After holding a variety of positions in the financial and banking industries, Steve retired from BB&T Bank in 2010 and spent the majority of his retirement following his grandchildren and serving on the Montgomery County Planning commission as
well as the Board of Zoning. Steve also volunteered at LewisGale Montgomery hospital and was a mainstay as a volunteer at election polls for over a decade.
Steve was a lifelong member of the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren serving as Trustee, Deacon, Moderator, Board Chairman, and Licensed Minister. Steve also was a member of the Christiansburg Lions Club serving as treasurer for 34 years.
Steve is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marie Harris Howard; and his daughter, Angie Howard Robins and son-in-law, Shane Robins; grandchildren, whom he followed religiously, are Avery Robins (10) and Evan Robins (14) all of Christiansburg; sister, Cheryl Lyons and husband Gerald of Dublin; and brother, John (Jakie) Karr and Sharon of Axton, Va.
He was proceeded in death by his mother, Sally Karr and father, Billy Howard; as well as a brother, Leonard (Lenny) Karr.
The family will receive guests on Saturday, August 5, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral is to be held at the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren on Sunday, August 6, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. with a graveside service to be held immediately following at Sunset
Cemetery.
Steve was known as a dedicated, hardworking and loving husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank all of those involved with Steve’s care over the past months.
