Silvers, Yvonne Stanger, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Bob, and her brothers, Billy Stanger, Leo Stanger, and Delmer Stanger, and sister, Thelma Hornbarger.
Yvonne was a retired school teacher, having devoted over 35 years to serving the students of the Christiansburg School System. She remained active in many social and service organizations after her retirement. She was a Jennie Award nominee in the GFWC-VA Blue Ridge District. She has served in various offices of the local chapter of the DAR. In the past, she was active in the Kiwanis Club Christmas program, and in the Belmont Ruritan Club Christmas program. Yvonne was a devoted member of the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, and was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Presbyterian Women of PC (USA) for her years of faithful service. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, not only to her own, but to the children who were fortunate enough to have her as a neighbor.
She is survived by her children, Sandra Silvers, of Harrisonburg, VA, and her son, Robert; Bobby Silvers and his wife, Penny Padgett, of Carrboro, NC, their children, Margaret and Amanda; and Billy Silvers, of Christiansburg, VA. She is also survived by brothers, Joe Stanger and wife, Betty, and Harry Stanger and wife, Doris; sisters-in-law, Lois Stanger, Mabel Stanger, and Mida Stanger; brother-in-law, J. Ralph Duncan; nephews, Glenn Stanger, David Stanger, D.G. Stanger, Neil Stanger, Jonathan Stanger, Bruce Stanger, Perry Hornbarger, Bob Morrow, Chuck Morrow, Mike Silvers, James " Sonny" Silvers, and Steven Dickerson; nieces, Jennifer Brumfield, Kathy Burroughs, Leisa Osborne, Cindy Slaughter, Nancy Curtis, and Cathy Guerrero; numerous great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, and cousins; special friends, Katelyn and Sarah Lane, Bryce, Kerabeth, Brendon, and Brody Long; and Joseph and Brock Schetselaar.
The family will receive family and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30 at Horne Funeral Home. A service in the celebration of her life will be held at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Donald Makin officiating. Interment to follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
